BENJI:

Benjamin, behind closed blistered lid you weep,
Not for dying, that doesn’t hurt,
But for inevitable sleep,
A sleep that when arrives you cannot reverse,
To change the world, your world, you now cannot,
Desires will travel with you in the hearse,
Whispered sighs convulse your soul,
The pointless reasons for it all, for not at all,
Listen Mama Moloise, Africa´s bell tolls,
Every Picinnini clad in dust´s apartheid hues,
Shall go with you Benji to hidden ecstasy,
Where no colour is permitted to air his views,
White doves among the grey, peeping at the sun who is ashamed,
To bestow upon this evil land an element called light,
Where the human soul is violated, raped & sorely maimed,
Cry Benjamin, cry Africa, cry all,
For the liberty of the human brain,
Demolish with strangled tears this bitter wall, Satan´s gall,
You die for a cause, a certain reason,
You should laugh, & indeed I see you smile,
Once free Benji, they cannot call you treason,
They cannot call you kaffir,
They cannot call you at all.
