NOCTURNAL AFRICAN NOISES:

Skulking, grunting, the padding of ungainly paw,

Night breathing of screech & blood-curdling caw,

Hunter & victim dodging, in old nocturnal dance,

Pirouetting over savannah, in leap & bloody prance,

Thudding of ripened pods & cracking of new seeds,

Chewing & munching by beasts, of dry golden weeds,

The splash of muddy river & flap of grandiose wings,

Gem-beaded golden eye & strange voice that sings,

My now ageing ears, straining in old ancient dreams,

Grasping past childhood, in sounds, long gone & been.
