“Let there be light”, words bestowed on man
by God,
With invention of firelight, man was taken
from dun sod,
Sunlight bequeathed, life, growth, happy
human smiles,
Enabling life to thrive, to work & walk
our many miles.
The gas-lamp-lighted shadows, upon old
cobbled streets,
Where old strays lurked & whores &
lovers went to meet,
The pathways, where carriages with old lanterns
trundled,
Where hungry tramps lay sleeping, cold &
tightly bundled.
Softly shines the tender light, of the candled
midnight lovers,
And that special dawn light ignited, exciting
hares & plovers,
Swaying lamps of midwives, in their dark midnight
birthings,
Torched lit paths, avoiding ogres, beasts &
nightly fur-things.
The city sirens flashing, traffic headlamps
& slick neon spitting,
Give me the gentle glow-worm, the stars &
soft fireflies flitting,
Give me the miner´s torch & leave the rest
beneath dark skies,
The only light I´ll ever need, is the one within
your loving eyes.
