Of onyx eye &
velvet wing,
Crow, rook &
blackbird sing,
Jackdaw, magpie,
& raven black,
Peat of bog, soot
chimney stack.
Maligned &
blamed for evil deeds,
Flinted glare of
malevolent bead,
Silken feathers
& satined plumes,
Birds of prey
& of midnight tombs.
Claw & talon,
clenched tar tight,
Gripping victims
into soaring flight,
Grey-slated nebs
of ancient tunes,
Perched upon rings
of winter moons.
Birds of
velveteen, black, black, black,
Painting pathways
on skyward tracks,
Hail to you my
black feathered friends,
As into ebon
nights you meld & blend.
